Assembly
The Lorell file cabinet comes pre-assembled in a box. The only thing that needs assembling are the steel handles. It would only take a few minutes to screw them in place with a screwdriver. This steel cabinet comes in 2 colors, black and putty. Both are sleek colors that would look great in an office setting.
The steel handle are easy to grab on to. They have a smooth surface, so pulling the cabinet out is gentle on the hands. It also goes along with the minimalist look of the shelf.
Size
This 2-drawer steel cabinet is made for letter-size hanging folders. It doesn’t come with a set of hanging folders. You would have to buy them separately. You can buy them from Amazon too along with this file cabinet.1.2
The vertical cabinet’s dimensions are exactly as advertised. To ensure the perfect fit, get letter-size hanging folders. Ordinary folders will do. If you have a lot of folders, though, you may have a hard time finding the folder that you need. With the hanging folders, the drawer can keep them at an elevated level for easy visibility and reach.
Each drawer is 18 inches deep. The depth provides plenty of space for hanging folders. The document drawers opens nearly all the way out. You can conveniently reach for folders even if they are at the very end of the drawer. If you are using larger folders instead of letter-size ones, you may store them sideways instead.
The height of the steel cabinet allows it to fit under a desk. This makes it a compact cabinet. If you have limited space in the office then buying this would be smart. Keeping the cabinet under the desk would also keep prying eyes away. It is also a good idea to hide it from view if you are working in a high-traffic area. If you are planning to get this for your home, you would most likely not want your room to look like an office. It is advisable that you store the cabinet under a table.
Quality
The file cabinet has a good weight and that says something about its quality. However, I’ve also seen a lot of steel cabinets that are heavier. If you only need a cabinet for holding several documents at the office then this would work.
As with other steel cabinets, pulling the drawer all the way out would put weight on the cabinet. This forces it to tip forward. For better weight distribution, place more documents on the botton drawer. The drawers stay along the tracks of the cabinet. They won’t get off the tracks unless you try to remove the entire drawer from the cabinet. The glides are made of steel and are heavy-duty. They can support the weight of the cabinet as well as folders. Weight won’t bend the metal glides. The glides are smooth, which makes the drawer easy to pull out and push in. Opening the drawers will make a sound but it’s nothing annoying or bothersome. The cabinet is so smooth that you can slam the drawer close. If you’re not careful, you can hurt your fingers.
The bottom of the file drawer can damage the floor. For this reason, it is recommended to get rubber or felt pads. Do not try to push this 2-drawer cabinet across the floor.
The steel cabinet comes with a lock. You get 2 keys with the cabinet. The lock secures both the top and bottom drawers. The lock does the job. If there was someone with the intention of getting their hands on some document, though, they would be able to break the lock open.
The exterior of the file cabinet is solid. It won’t get dents easily. You can stack 2 file cabinets on top of each otherg. The top is sturdy enough to support the weight of a cabinet. Take note that this is not fire-proof. Fire-proof drawers cost far more.
